East meets West in Jaime Hayon’s playful tweak of a traditional Asian lantern in contemporary expression. Dating back centuries, paper lanterns have featured in Asia amongst the privileged and the poor, where different colors, shapes and sizes connote different meanings.
Here Hayon has dispensed with cultural formalities to create a series of lamps all in white. Handcrafted with rice paper merging various sizes and shapes together. The series is comprised of three different lantern versions and a table lamp in ivory white rice paper with black stained oak accents.
Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. The project that first brought him to the forefront of the design was his installations "Mediterranean Digital Baroque" and Mon Cirque." These blended the lines between design and art and led to subsequent exhibitions and shows at well-known galleries and art fairs worldwide.
Today Hayon Studio is headquartered in Valencia, Spain, and has offices in Barcelona and Treviso, Italy. The studio and Jaime have won numerous awards such as Elle Decoration International Design Award, "Top 100" by Wallpaper Magazine, and as a visionary by Times magazine.
